WAYS TO GIVE

Pledging Your Support

If the success and the sustainability of a stable monastic community are important, please consider becoming a pledging member. Your monthly pledges support members of our monastic community, maintain our existing buildings, help meet our monthly operating expenses, provide translation services when required, support our visiting teachers, acquire ritual items and Dharma material, and reproduce Dharma texts for our monks and lay members. You can also designate your offering for a specific purpose. Your tax-deductible contribution can be made in various ways:

OFFERING AIR MILES: You can donate your airline miles so our monastics can travel to retreats, teachings, and other Dharma-related events.

PLANNED GIVING (Create a lasting legacy): You can designate Dagom Geden Kunkyob Ling Buddhist Monastery as a beneficiary in your Last Will and Testament. You may (1) name a specific gift amount, (2) assign a percentage of your total estate to the Monastery, and/or (3) designate a share of the remainder after gifts to your heirs. If you need to create a Will and/or Trust or need to update your legal documents, consider using this free resource. In either case, you can create a lasting legacy by:

  • Making Bequests Through Wills/Trusts

A bequest for the benefit of Dagom Geden Kunkyob Ling (DGKL) is one of the simplest ways to provide for the Monastery’s future. It can be included in the body of your will or added by a codicil (a supplement that explains or modifies a will). To name The Monastery as the beneficiary, you should use our legal name: Dagom Geden Kunkyob Ling Buddhist Monastery Corp.

Suppose you are currently drawing up your will. In that case, you may use this sample language if you wish: “I give, devise, and bequeath to Dagom Geden Kunkyob Ling Buddhist Monastery Corp., federal tax ID number 81-3662919, 2123 N. Pennsylvania Street, Indianapolis, IN 46202, the sum of $___ (or describe the real or personal property portion of the estate) to be used for its general purposes."

    1. The most helpful bequest is an unrestricted bequest for the general purposes of DGKL. This permits the Monastery to use your gift wherever it is most needed. However, you also may describe a specific purpose for using your bequest.

Important Note: If you do specify a use for your bequest, the following language will ensure that your gift will always remain productive: "If at any time in the judgment of the Board of Directors of Dagom Geden Kunkyob Ling Buddhist Monastery Corp. the designated use of this bequest is no longer practicable or appropriate, then the Board shall use the bequest to further the general purposes of the Monastery, giving consideration, where possible, to my special interest as described above.

  • Using Retirement Assets
Qualified retirement plan funds are an excellent source of assets for bequests. By designating DGKL as a beneficiary (it can be a contingent beneficiary after the death of a spouse), funds are passed to the Monastery free of taxes. The beneficiary can be set up as the recipient of the remaining funds in the account or establish a percentage to fund the bequest.

  • Gifting Intellectual Property
Donations of royalties or residuals to the Monastery are a generous way to provide a legacy of care for performing arts and entertainment professionals for years to come. Many notable professionals have made similar gifts to similar non-profits in the past. Folks like you (actors, playwrights, lyricists, producers, dancers, and more) can make such a donation.

  • Other ways: Other ways to contribute outside of a Will, Trust, or other estate planning document is to name the Monastery as the beneficiary on any asset—bank account, brokerage account, stocks, mutual fund, retirement account, or life insurance. If you have any non-probate assets not included in your will, such as an IRA, 401(k), or a life insurance policy, you can designate DGKL as a beneficiary.

STOCK TRANSFERS: Stock and Money Market donations can be made using this link. If you need additional information, please contact our office, and we can provide the information you need.

TAX-FREE IRA ROLLER: If you are 70½ years old or older, you can make a qualified charitable distribution to Dagom Geden Kunkyob Ling as a tax benefit since it is a registered 501(c)(3) organization, and this becomes a straightforward way to receive a tax benefit. The IRS allows you to give up to $100,000 annually from your IRA directly to a qualified charity like the Monastery without paying income taxes on the donated money. You can make such a monthly distribution, or you can make a lump sum offering annually.

For sentient beings, poor and destitute,
May I become a treasure ever-plentiful,
And lie before them closely in their reach,
A varied source of all that they might need.
